Department of Applied Biology

Undergraduate Requirements

Candidates seeking admission into BSc. Applied Biology programme must have at least grade C6 in all three Core and Elective Subjects. WASSCE holders who have Grades D7 or E8 or F9 in any of their three Core or elective subjects are advised not to apply for a degree programme.

Candidates should therefore possess, at least, credit scores/grades in the following:
Three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics (Core) and Integrated Science/Social Studies).
Any three of the major Science Electives: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture and Mathematics.

The aggregate Score of the best six subjects (three core and three electives) must not exceed 36.

Mature applicants

Eligible applicants for the Mature Entry must meet the following criteria:

Be 25 years or above by August 31, of the incoming academic year with relevant work experience.
Have passes in five ‘O’ Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics or Statistics and Science.

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) holders must have passed or better (A to D) in English Language and Mathematics (Core) plus any other credit passes in three elective subjects.

West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), holders must have passed or better (A1 to D7) in English Language and Mathematics (Core) plus any other credit passes in three elective subjects.

Candidates would be expected to write and pass both a selection examination and an interview (on a scheduled date by the University’s Academic Affairs Unit).

Only candidates who obtain satisfactory marks in the selection examination and interview will be admitted to pursue the degree programme.

Advanced Level Candidates

Candidates must have credit passes in five GCE ordinary-level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and three science subjects including Biology.

Have passes in three GCE advanced level subjects one of which should be Biology.

 

Postgraduate Requirements

To be considered for the MPhil programme, the applicant should possess a Bachelor of Science degree with at least second class or its equivalent from a recognized institution in the relevant field of study.

Department of Environmental Science

Undergraduate Requirements

Candidates seeking admission into B.Sc. Environmental Science Programme must have at least C6 in three of the five core subjects, particularly English language, Core mathematics, and Core Science.

Have similar passes in any three elective subjects namely: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture and Elective Mathematics.

Mature Applicants

Candidates with a minimum age of 25 years would be allowed to pursue the programme, provided they have some minimum academic requirements.

Also, holders of very good Diplomas in similar areas from recognized tertiary institutions can be given admission. Such prospective students may be considered at level 200.

Advanced Level Candidates

A-Level Candidates should have obtained 5 credits at the ‘O’ Level including English language and Mathematics and a minimum grade of D in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Agriculture. A pass in general paper is also required.

Requirements (Masters)

The minimum qualification for admission is a BSc degree (First- or Second-Class Honours) or equivalent in Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, Physics, Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry or any other science-related discipline from a recognized institution or equivalent overseas qualification with relevant experience.

Where an applicant has a lesser degree qualification but has substantial work experience and outstanding references, the Admissions Panel may make a special case to the Board of the Graduate School for admission. Applications will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Requirements (PhD)

To be eligible for admission, an applicant must hold a Master’s Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Science or a related field.

Research and work experience in a relevant and related area is desired. In addition, applicants shall be expected to pass a selection interview.
